Upcycling Sewing Project with Google Singapore | A Sustainability Engagement

Scrapplique Galore’s recent collaboration with Google Singapore is a one-day, immersive activation designed to bring the principles of circular fashion to life through real-time craftsmanship, storytelling through employee engagement activity to create an environment where sustainability is demonstrated.

Rather than a conventional seminar or static displays, the experience was designed as a live sewing hub, situated within the dynamic environment of the Google Singapore office. The goal was to spark curiosity, invite interaction, and foster a deeper understanding of textile waste and its potential transformation.

At the heart of this experience were three skilled seamstresses, each bringing years of craftsmanship, precision, and knowledge. Their role extended beyond production; they became educators, storytellers, and ambassadors of sustainable practice.

As the live activation began, the space gradually transformed into something unexpected. The hum of sewing machines replaced the usual office ambience. Vibrant fabrics that were once discarded as off-cuts were reintroduced as raw materials for creation.

Employees passing through paused, observed, and soon found themselves drawn into the process. Every product created during the activation began its journey as a fragment textile scraps that would otherwise contribute to the growing global issue of textile waste filling up our landfills.

These off-cuts, often overlooked in traditional manufacturing systems, represent a significant environmental concern. Yet, within the framework of circular design, they hold untapped potential.

By intentionally choosing to work with discarded materials, the live sewing highlighted a critical message - Waste is a resource waiting to be redefined at Scrapplique Galore

Employees were able to witness this transformation firsthand. What began as irregular pieces of fabrics were carefully sorted, selected, and reconfigured. Colour combinations were explored, textures were matched, and design decisions were made in real time.

The live sewing stations quickly became the focal point of the activation.

Each seamstress operated with a rhythm that balanced efficiency and precision. There was no automation, no mass production line but only skilled hands sewing fabrics through each stage of creation.

Employees gathered around, observing the intricacies of the process:

  • How seams were aligned and reinforced
  • How patterns were adapted to irregular fabric shapes
  • How finishing details elevated the final product

This visibility created a powerful contrast to the often-invisible processes behind mass-produced goods. It encouraged participants to reconsider the value of craftsmanship and seamstress.

One of the most impactful aspects of the activation was the direct interaction between employees and seamstresses.

Unlike traditional workshops, this experience was inherently conversational. Each question sparked a deeper exchange. The seamstresses shared insights from their lived experiences, stories of materials, techniques, and the evolving landscape of sustainable fashion.

These conversations transformed the activation into a shared learning environment, where knowledge was co-created.

To complement the sewing experience, a dedicated host guided participants through the broader context of textile upcycling and sustainability.

It connected the immediate act of creation to the larger lifecycle of fabrics from production and consumption to disposal and regeneration.

Throughout the day, the seamstresses produced a curated range of products, each selected for its balance of functionality, simplicity, and engagement potential.

Phone Stands

Our signature product - phone stands offered a quick turnaround while showcasing structural design. Their practicality made them immediately relatable to employees.

Scrunchies

Another signature item, scrunchies combined ease of production with high visual appeal. Their vibrant colours and soft textures made them a favourite among participants.

Fabric Pouches

Slightly more complex in construction, pouches demonstrated how upcycled materials can be transformed into durable, everyday accessories.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks provided an additional avenue for engagement, particularly for those interested in smaller, intricate items and book lovers.

By the end of the day, over 200+ upcycled products had been created.

This number is significant not only as a measure of output, but as an indicator of what can be achieved through focused, purpose-driven craftsmanship.

More importantly, each item represented:

  • A piece of textile diverted from waste
  • A conversation initiated
  • A perception shifted

The cumulative impact extended beyond the physical products. It was reflected in the energy of the space, the depth of engagement, and the positive feedback received.

For the duration of the activation, the office environment evolved into something more than a workspace. It became a live sewing hub - a space where ideas, materials, and people intersected.

Employees who might not typically engage with sustainability initiatives found themselves participating organically. The accessibility of the experience removed barriers making it inclusive and inviting.

The response from Google employees was overwhelmingly positive.

Feedback highlighted several key themes:

  • Appreciation for the hands-on, interactive format
  • Increased awareness of textile waste and upcycling
  • Recognition of the skill and effort involved in craftsmanship
  • Interest in incorporating sustainable practices into daily life

From a corporate perspective, the live sewing activation achieved multiple objectives:

  • Enhanced employee engagement
  • Reinforced organisational commitment to sustainability
  • Delivered a memorable, differentiated experience

This collaboration offers valuable insights for organisations seeking to elevate their sustainability initiatives.

1. Move Beyond Passive Learning

Interactive experiences drive deeper engagement than traditional formats.

2. Employee Engagement

Connecting employees with seamstress and real-world processes creates empathy and understanding.

3. Demonstrate, Don’t Just Communicate

Live activations make abstract concepts tangible.

4. Align with Organisational Values

Experiences should reflect and reinforce broader sustainability goals.

At its core, this activation was about more than a single day or a specific set of products. It was about advancing a broader vision - A world where discarded materials are continuously reimagined, where textile waste is minimised, and where individuals are empowered to participate in sustainable CSR activites.

By bringing this vision into a corporate setting, Scrapplique Galore and Google Singapore demonstrated that sustainability can be both practical and inspiring.

As the activation concluded, Employees walked away not only with products, but with new perspectives. What began as a collection of discarded scraps had become a catalyst for conversation, learning, and change.

And perhaps most importantly, it reinforced a simple yet powerful truth "Sustainability is not a distant goal but it is a series of simple actions, choices, and interactions that can begin anywhere, even within the walls of an office."

If your organisation is exploring ways to create meaningful, high-impact sustainability experiences, Scrapplique Galore offers tailored activations designed to engage, educate, and inspire.
